Abstract

Many of Cebu City’s heritage sites and historical events are well-celebrated while some remain underappreciated. The Battle Tres de Abril, despite its historical relevance, remains underappreciated. This study does a thematic analysis on the perception of different sectors on Tres de Abril, the existing means of promoting it, and the challenges faced in its promotion. With the use of Roland Barthes’ semiotic diagram, the study traces the possible reasons why Tres de Abril is struggling in its promotion. The results reveal that the public perception and historian’s perception are not parallel with the promotional efforts of the government. This explains why the Battle of Tres de Abril remains underappreciated.
